Home to Mt. Everest, this mountain kingdom rises from near sea-levels at its southern border with India to it’s northern border with Tibet (China) that is home to 8 out of the world’s 10 tallest mountains.

Geographical isolation and political instability has left Nepal as one of the least developed countries in the world. 25% of the population earns less than $1.25 per day, but that is down from 44% a decade ago, so the country is making strides in the right direction. After a decade-long civil war, the long-ruling monarchy ceded power in 2008, giving way to democratic reforms, and in 2015, a new constitution.

A dent was put in the progress as twin earthquakes measuring up to 7.8 M struck Nepal in April 2015, killing nearly 9,000. The quakes leveled entire villages, and left hundreds of thousands Nepalese homeless.

Program Impact

Nearly 80% of Nepal’s population are subsistence farmers in rural, and often rugged, surroundings. Food security and poor nutrition is a major concern, and weather plays a major part in determining annual harvests. Partnering with another Christian development organization, World Poverty Solutions began working in Nepal in 2012, but the project has experienced major challenges due to the devastating earthquakes that hit the country in 2015. Many local believers and churches have had to divert their attention away from long-term development efforts to relieving the more immediate needs of earthquake victims.

Work recently began in 10 churches. Initial training is underway, and we’re projecting that development initiatives will start later this year.
