El Salvador, or “The Savior” as it translates from Spanish, is located in Central America. The country borders Guatemala to the west, Honduras to the east, and the Pacific to the south. El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, and is known for it’s coffee, and other agricultural products. It’s also home to 23 active volcanoes.

For much of the 20th century El Salvador was characterized by dictatorships, military coups, and vicious civil wars. Today, although the country is now democratic, the violence continues through vicious gangs such as the infamous MS-13. The World Health Organization considers the violence so bad it has dubbed it an epidemic, and a 2011 UN study ranked El Salvador as the world’s most violent nation, not including countries at war. Many of the country’s poorest live in the areas most affected by the gang violence. Children and youth are especially vulnerable and easy targets for gang induction.

The consolidation of peace, stability and democracy since 1992 is an answer to prayer, after the intense suffering of civil war. Elections and economics now replace death squads and assassinations. In one generation, El Salvador has gone from a predominantly agrarian, rural society to one in which 60% live in cities. This flow to the cities generates new challenges regarding infrastructure, crime and poverty. Nearly 36% live below the poverty line.
